Mornings would be beautiful if they didn’t happen so early in the day.

Today’s Wednesday Words are painfully appropriate, since a friend is picking me up at 7:15 in the A.M. (I’m a grad student so I don’t have to do things like that!)
And the title of this post comes from the awfullest of my dad’s ways of waking me up as a kid… his own mother had sung it unironically.

My mother used to sing to me too:
“It’s time to get up and out of bed. It’s time to get up your sleepy head. The world is starting just for you…doo doodeledoo doodelledoo.”

My friend Daniel used to go to YMCA camp, where they were woken every morning by a REALLY LONG song that began,
“Ri-ise, and shi-ine, and give God your glory glory…”
I know most of the song just from how it was burned into his brain (I met him at least five years later). It had a big effect.
I sometimes wake up my developmentally disabled cousin by singing, “Wake that ass, wake that ass, wake that wake that wake that ass…” and slapping either my own ass or hers. (I picked this up from someone whose college roommate used to do it to her…) She pretends to be very prudishly alarmed, and loves it.
